Incoming Students

Committees

Please check the Physics & Astronomy form page for the most up to date versions of these forms. You can find there:

  • First Guidance Committee Meeting Form
  • Second (and greater) Guidance Committee Meeting Form
  • Various forms necessary upon PhD completion

Additionally, there are forms specific to FRIB students found here:

Finally there's a form from MSU that needs to be filled out in advance of your second meeting. This has a list of classes, etc. on it. You need to get this form from Kim Crosslan.

Miscellaneous

Rules for Committee Members

The following materials must be submitted as a complete packet when using a non-typical committee member.

  1. A letter of request from the Department Chairperson or Graduate Program Director with supporting signature from the Dean or Associate Dean of the College, to be sent to the Dean of the Graduate School. This letter will request that the individual serve on any student committee OR on a specific student’s committee and state why this person is appropriate (e.g. special expertise).
  2. A letter from the individual summarizing his/her background and qualifications to serve as a member of a graduate student committee.
  3. A copy of the individual’s C.V.
  4. Two letters of reference that speak to the individual’s qualifications to serve on graduate students' committees. (One letter may be from an MSU faculty member, but at least one letter must be from an external source.)

In general, no more than one non-typical committee member may serve on an M.S. committee and no more than two on a doctoral committee.
